In the age of automation, customer service and human touch will become increasingly important. Machines shouldn’t act like humans, and humans shouldn’t act like machines. How can we design technology at human scale? Technology that is ethical, transparent and locally maintainable? Technology that becomes a part of a user’s life and not a distraction from it? This practical talk explores the concept of calm technology, an idea from some of the early pioneers in ubiquitous computing. Their ideas were that the scarcest resource would no longer be technology, but attention, and that future technology would be dangerous if not well-designed.
