From Screen to Street: Activism in the Smartphone Era

Short thesis

The gap between activism on the streets and online debate seems to become bigger in between the last years: Whilst the biggest street demonstrations were held by progressive activists, the debating culture online suffered from hatred through alt-rights and trolls. We want to look at strategies that use online communities to mobilize people for activism, how those strategies differ in different political directions and which strategies actually work best.

Description

The gap between activism on the streets and political debates online seems to become bigger in between the last years: Whilst the biggest street demonstrations were held by progressive activists, the debating culture online suffered from hatred through alt-rights and trolls.

We want to look at strategies that online communities use to mobilize people for activism. Is there a division between online and offline communities? Can it be crossed? And how can communities, that connected on screen, be brought together face to face? How do strategies differ in different political directions? And also what strategies actually work best.
